In Year One we follow a more structured morning, when the children explore and learn in English and Maths. During the afternoons the children take part in PE lessons and explore other areas of learning in a more practical way. We will use Tapestry to record elements of the children's learning alongside exercise books which are based in class. Look out for details of how to log in to Tapestry coming home in book bags.
Phonics is a very important part of our day in Year One. In the summer term, all Year One pupils have to do a Phonics Screening Check which consists of 40 real and fake words the children have to decode and read aloud. If the children just miss out on the pass mark, they will have to retake the check the following year.
We need to work together to ensure that your child has the best possible chance of passing this check so any reading helps. Whether it is reading books, reading signposts or reading menus in restaurants, these can all be recorded in your child's reading record so we can see just how much your child is using their phonics.
If you are unsure of the pronunciation of any of the graphemes in your child's reading book, or would just like a reminder, please watch the video below.
A useful video clip showing the correct 'pure' pronounciation of phonemes (units of sound).
